Homeless
Homelessness is an ever increasing situation in the United
States and Wilmington, North Carolina is no exception. The
last attempt at determining how many homeless residents there
were in this area showed nearly 2,000 homeless here. Some are
families, but many are single men. The reasons for the person
being homeless vary and are almost as numerous as the number
of homeless.
Homelessness is, above all, a human problem, impacting each
life a little differently. They all have one thing in common -
the lack of a place to call home.
The Wilmington, North Carolina Mercy House shelter is a
42-bed facility. Since the doors opened in October 1995 there
has been an annual registration of between 3500-5000 men over
the age of 18. Of those which we have personal knowledge
approximately 10-25% have used Mercy House to turn their lives
around and returned to a productive life-style.
